Today, we want to share information that can improve the quality of life for our favorite women, mothers. Published earlier this year to the American Physical Therapy Association, we have improved guidelines on how to better serve our postpartum mamas while navigating life with a newborn, return to fitness, and pain management.
Specifically, many women experience pelvic girdle pain after childbirth.
Here are 3 ways a physical therapist can help you or women you know with pelvic girdle pain after childbirth:
1. EDUCATION
We provide education on postpartum pelvic girdle pain, normal changes postpartum, and body mechanics. We help you develop functional movement strategies for daily activities and childcare tasks. The more you understand about your body, the better you will be able to take care of yourself and baby!
2. POSTPARTUM EXERCISE PROGRAMMING
We are experts in the human movement system and exercise. We can provide an exercise program to improve performance of the pelvic floor, lower abdominals, back and hip muscles to help you return to fitness in a safe and successful way. Modifications as needed and strategic, skilled progressions get you back to the activities you love!
3. INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENT
There is no one size fits all when it comes to postpartum rehab and return to fitness. You are not magically “cleared” at 6 weeks postpartum. At PXM, we help you identify an individualized plan based on your unique birth experience and postpartum goals. We may utilize co-interventions to exercise as needed to reduce pain during exercise and improve function as you rebuild strength and fitness. Our top goal is helping you be the healthiest individual and mother possible!
