In this 2023 article, data was collected from 25,241 “non exerciser” participants for 16 hours per day, 3 days per week. Researchers tracked Vigorous Intermittent Lifestyle Physical Activities (VILPA) – like stair climbing or brisk uphill walking in the “non exercisers” via accelerometers.
What they found was: “Death from any cause or from cancer was 38% to 40% lower among those who engaged in a minimum of 1 or 2 minutes of VILPA 3 times a day than among those who did not engage in any VILPA. VILPA was also associated with a 48% to 49% decrease in mortality from cardiovascular disease.”
While we would LOVE to see everyone go to the gym several times per week, we must recognize the life lengthening effects of adding in short bouts of movement! Any workout or movement is good for you. Get after it!
