IT Band Syndrome is a very commonly diagnosed ailment in runners and active adults. If pain presents on the outside of your hip, thigh or knee. The symptoms often feel like tightness, and we see our clients try to stretch their IT band to get out of pain. Spoiler alert: stretching your IT band is not an effective treatment!
This paper published in 2020 looked at stiffness of the IT band and runner’s with IT band pain. “Following six weeks of physiotherapy, hip muscle strength (all directions but abduction), pain and lower extremity function were significantly improved. IT band stiffness, however, was found to be increased compared to baseline measurements.”
With increased stiffness came decreased pain. Therefore, increasing the mobility of the IT band and/or its associated muscles is not an effective treatment. A much more effective plan is to stop stretching the IT band and look at mechanics and strength instead!
